Preventive dentistry includes the things that we do to maintain optimal oral health. Did you know that cavities are the most common chronic childhood disease? It is a preventable disease, and it is also simple to treat. Early detection leads to easy visits for kids to get their “sugar bugs” taken out and a nice clean filling put in. We want to make sure that kids are not afraid of going to the dentist and that their first exposure to the dental office is full of good memories!
Believe it or not, most kids do not even need to get numb for their dental work because they don't know what to expect! They feel a little water and some air, and they are done! We want to maintain baby teeth until they naturally fall out because they help hold the space for the adult teeth. Those “milk teeth” have a very important role in the development of the teeth and jaws.
At Dental Designs of New England, our main goal is to help our patients maintain their natural smiles for as long as possible. In order to do this, we offer a number of treatments to help prevent the three leading causes of tooth loss. We also have multiple solutions that can rebuild and replace damaged/missing teeth in order to keep the bite functioning properly. We recommend that every member of your family have at least two checkups and cleanings per year in order to keep them protected from the most common dental problems. For a checkup, Dr. Shetty will look at a patient’s teeth, gums, jaw, and existing dental work so she can catch and treat issues at their earliest stages. And with a cleaning, one of our hygienists will expertly remove plaque and tartar buildup on the teeth, particularly targeting those areas that toothbrushes and floss can’t reach at home.
Our team is always happy to treat the youngest members of your family! Many of our team members are parents themselves, so we’ll know just how to keep your little one comfortable starting from their very first visit. We’ll get to know them so we can provide exactly what their growing smile needs, plus we take time during every appointment to help teach them about healthy homecare habits to put them on the path to a lifetime of oral health.
Tension in the jaw muscles and unconscious teeth grinding (known as bruxism) are two of the most prominent and underdiagnosed causes of chronic headaches and migraines. We’re able to help many patients stop their persistent head pain through the use of a small, custom-made oral appliance. Just by wearing one to bed, an appliance can help calm hyperactive jaw muscles and protect the teeth from nocturnal grinding so a patient can live pain-free and protect their smile as well!
More and more people are primarily drinking bottled water these days, meaning they are missing out on the fluoride that is usually found in tap water. Regular exposure to this mineral is the key to helping children and adults alike avoid cavities long-term, so as part of every regular checkup, we include a topical fluoride treatment. We simply apply a highly-concentrated fluoride solution to the teeth, and after a few minutes, we rinse it off. That’s all it takes to give our patients reliable cavity protection year around!
